In March of 2020, the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic health emergency due to the rapid spread of COVID-19. In 2021, the U.S. Department of Education classified RCC as a Predominantly Black Institution (PBI), the only school in New England with such a designation. The new classification provides the school with more opportunities for federal funding while also enabling students to access to scholarships traditionally open to students at Historically Black colleges and institutions and PBIs.
